Pre-owned commercial kitchen equipment can be a smart way to fit out a new venue, replace a failed unit quickly or increase capacity without stretching the budget. Branded equipment is often built for years of commercial service. But condition, installation requirements, parts availability and service history matter far more than a low sticker price.
Start With the Job the Equipment Must Do
Inspecting equipment properly starts before you stand in front of it. Be clear about the product you need, the volume it must handle and the services available at your premises. A three-door upright fridge may be a bargain, for example, but it is not useful if your back-of-house access is too narrow or the available power supply does not match the unit.
Think through peak service, not quiet periods. A fryer for a takeaway shop, a dishwasher for a club bistro or a planetary mixer for a bakery needs to cope with its busiest realistic workload. Buying too small often creates more pressure on staff and shortens the equipment’s remaining life.
Confirm the dimensions, clearances, ventilation needs and delivery path. Measure doorways, corridors, lifts and the final position. Check whether the floor can carry the load and whether plumbing, drainage, gas and electrical connections are ready. A low purchase price can disappear quickly if significant site works are required.
Pre-Owned Equipment Inspection: What to Check First
Begin with the identification plate. It should show the brand, model, serial number, electrical rating and, where relevant, gas details. This information lets you confirm the unit’s specifications, age range, compatible accessories and potential availability of replacement parts. If a seller cannot clearly identify the model, proceed carefully.
Then inspect the overall condition. Surface marks on stainless steel are normal in a working kitchen. Deep corrosion, distorted panels, poorly finished repairs, loose doors, missing controls and obvious water damage are different issues. They can point to hard use, poor cleaning practices or a fault that has not been addressed properly.
A practical inspection should cover these areas:
- Structure and cabinet condition: Look for rust, dents affecting seals or doors, cracked welds, unstable legs and damaged castors. Check that doors close squarely and latches engage properly.
- Controls and displays: Turn knobs, switches and touch controls through their full range. Labels should be readable, displays should work clearly and settings should respond as expected.

Ask to See It Operating
Whenever possible, see the equipment run through a normal cycle or operating temperature. A switched-on indicator light is not a performance test. Refrigeration should pull down and hold the appropriate temperature. Ovens should heat evenly and hold their set point. Dishwashers should fill, heat, wash, drain and rinse without leaks or fault codes.
For cooking equipment, listen for unusual noises from fans, motors, burners and ignition systems. Check that burners light consistently, flames appear stable and controls regulate heat properly. With combi ovens, inspect the door seal, fan operation, steam generation, drainage and probe connections where fitted.
For refrigeration, check compressor noise, fan operation, condenser cleanliness and door seals. Look inside the cabinet for ice build-up, water pooling or damage around evaporator areas. A fridge that feels cold during a brief viewing may still struggle in a hot kitchen at full load, so ask what testing has been performed and whether temperature performance has been verified.
Check the Expensive Wear Items
Every equipment category has parts that commonly wear first. On fryers, inspect baskets, thermostat operation, drain valves and the condition of the tank. On dishwashers, pay attention to pumps, heating elements, wash arms, filters and chemical connections. On mixers, check bowl locks, speed changes, attachments and signs of oil leaks from the gearbox.
For bakery machinery, test guards and safety switches as well as belts, rollers, bearings and moving assemblies. For display cabinets, inspect glass, sliding doors, lights, shelving, refrigeration performance and drainage. Parts availability is a major buying factor. Some older premium brands remain serviceable because common parts are readily available. Include freight, access equipment, installation, commissioning, consumables, filters, servicing and any required site upgrades in your comparison. A cheaper oven that needs major electrical work may cost more overall than a slightly higher-priced alternative that suits the existing kitchen.
Warranty also changes the value equation. Understand what is covered, for how long and whether labour, travel and parts are included. A warranty does not remove the need for sensible maintenance, but it gives useful protection when buying equipment that has already been in service.
